May 2026: Chemical, Water Quality and Macroinvertebrate Analysis

Hi everyone

Please find attached the Water Quality Monitoring results for May 2026.

The following notes are offered for your consideration:

• Water temperatures are slowly dropping, reflecting the extended summer weather we have been experiencing; the readings in the Coomera River being amongst the lowest

•  Dissolved Oxygen levels are good, reflecting the amount of rainfall experienced during the month – good new for water dependent animals

• Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) readings are slowly declining: note that ORP levels, in order to effectively combat pollutants, should be around the 600mV level

• Reactive phosphorous levels in the Coomera River unexpectedly peaked at FG Walker bridge, and also between Riverstone Crossing and Killarney Court. Fertiliser is generally to blame for such concentrations.

• The lower levels of Ammonia Nitrogen continue to be very pleasing as the readings generally reflect lower sewage levels.

  
  

All in all, the health of the rivers and streams is sound, with plenty of wildlife both within the water and around the water. This despite the commercial activity and increasing urbanization.

For those people wanting to spot the Snapping Turtle recently mentioned, the western end of Waterhen Lake is a great staring point. You will need to be both noiseless and stealthy.
